Mindfulness in an Anxious World Class 7

A Summary of The Discernment of Spirits:

  1. If you're on the wrong path the enemy will make bad choices appear pleasurable, but the good spirit will trouble your conscience.

  2. If you're on the right path the good spirit will encourage you, but the enemy will present obstacles.

  3. Consolation is both being on fire with God’s love and having remorse for one’s sins.

  4. Desolation is turmoil, darkness, anxiety and a lack of hope. It only comes from the enemy.

  5. Don’t change your mind when you're feeling down-and-out. Stick to your original plan.

  6. When in desolation, intensify spiritual practices.

  7. When in desolation, remember that God has not abandoned you.

  8. When in desolation, be patient. This, too, will pass.

  9. We experience desolation because we’ve either been spiritually lazy, or because we are being tested, or because it’s a time provided for spiritual  growth.

  10. When in consolation, gather the graces. Desolation will return.

  11. When in consolation, stay humble. It’s all a gift from God.

  12. The enemy is weak when challenged and strong if we are weak.

  13. The enemy loves secrecy. Talk to someone.

  14. The enemy knows and attacks your weak spot. Know what it is and prepare.

Mindfulness Class 4

This is the mindfulness class 4 where we continue our discussion of loneliness and some of the surrounding problems that can cause anxiety and alienation. Due to a sound glitch please excuse the recording quality on the live streamed version. Sadly, there is no video on YouTube for this week. Bette quality sound can be found on the podcast version.

Mindfulness in an Anxious World Class 2

Welcome to the second class of our mindfulness series. In this class we explore the roots of anxiety both biologically and cognitively and discuss some strategies to meet it, understand it and find peace. We also explore the power of humor in dealing with anxiety.

Please continue to spread the news about this class and invite people to watch it, particularly if they are experiencing anxiety, worry, fear or doubt in life.

By laughing at our fate, it is as if we were stepping out of a situation and looking at it from a distance, as if we were outside observers, so to speak.

Mindfulness in an Anxious World Class 1

Welcome to Mindfulness in an Anxious World: Class 1. In this class we will be exploring mindfulness in the Catholic context as well as ways of understanding and better managing anxiety through the behavioral sciences and Catholic tradition to lead us to a richer, less stressful and trusting life that is in deep union with God. I hope you find the class helpful and share it with many. In future class posts you will find all relevant class notes, recommendations, links, documents and presentation slides. Through this class, I hope you will come to a deeper encounter with Jesus Christ and, in that, a deeper peace in these anxious times.

LOVE AFTER LOVE

The time will come

when, with elation,

you will greet yourself arriving

at your own door, in your own mirror,

and each will smile at the other’s welcome,

and say, sit here. Eat.

You will love again the stranger who was yourself.

Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart

to itself, to the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored

for another, who knows you by heart.

Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

the photographs, the desperate notes,

peel your own image from the mirror.

Sit. Feast on your life.
